was largely instrumental in my development. He taught my 300 level drawing class at the Alberta College of Art and Design during my undergrad. The students called him Coach Kottmann because he regularly wore a tracksuit and used a sports whistle during warm-up exercises. The objective was to sketch a nude in a few seconds, using a variety of techniques including contour, line, and gesture; sometimes standing on one foot, switching hands, or closing our eyes. He used to say that the artist needs to walk into space and kick the can to check its reality; then proceed to carve out a three-dimensional image on a two-dimensional surface. This work addressed that concept through a step-down process, and while improving my drawing techniques I found what speaks to me most.
